The season of allergy in Belarus is already in full bloom: according to the doctor, you need to fight not with the symptoms, but with the disease itself – allergies are fraught with very dangerous acute reactions.

Sputnik turned to an allergist at the Lode Medical Center: they learned how to recognize pollinosis, what to do to make it easier, and whether it is possible to get rid of it permanently.

Allergy season in Belarus is in full swing

The cause of seasonal allergies is most often pollen, so that it occurs almost at the same time (sometimes even numbers).

“The first patients came to us a month ago. Pollen has a tendency to be transported up to a thousand kilometers: in Belarus it could not even begin active flowering, but in early March it warmed dramatically; the wind brought pollen from the south, and people suffering from this disease even its low concentration in the air ", said allergy specialist Tatyana Litvinova, Sputnik.

According to the expert, the seasonal allergy in the republic stretches for a long time: it can occur from the beginning of March and continue until October, if the weather conditions are warm enough.

Birch blossoms in the spring forest – all people are happy, and allergies are sad

“In Belarus there are three pollination seasons. The first – early – occurs in March, April and early May; in this case, tree pollen acts as an allergen: alder, birch, and hazel. In the second season, from mid-May to mid-July, there is pollination of meadow and grasses. And the last pollinated asteraceae, among them the most aggressive allergen is wormwood, "explained Litvinova.

How to recognize seasonal allergies

According to the allergist, often people do not realize that they suffer from allergies: they write off quite familiar symptoms for a cold, off-season. Some Belarusians are first treated by therapists for years.

“Most often, clinically allergic is manifested by itchy eyes, tearing, runny nose and sneezing, the person is worse on the street than in the apartment, and the hardest is outside the city, the pollen concentration is higher there,” the allergist explained.

To distinguish allergies from colds can be a number of signs, says the doctor: with allergies there is no temperature and symptoms of intoxication, there is malaise at the same time every year, and the effect of antibiotic treatment is absent.

Diagnostic methods and treatment

To diagnose a specific allergy, it is necessary to consult a specialist. Two methods are available in Belarus: skin tests and a blood test for specific immunoglobulin. Both, according to Litvinova, are accessible, quick and fairly informative.

“If pollen allergy was established, it can also be treated in two ways. With more common symptomatic therapy, an antihistamine is prescribed to help the person survive the season more favorably, relieves the condition by relieving symptoms. However, this does not affect the future: problems return next year.” – explained the allergist.

According to her, attention should be paid to the radical treatment option – specific immunotherapy, during which allergens are administered to the patient according to a specific scheme during the autumn-winter period, thus teaching the immune system to react correctly.

“It’s quite an effective method (80-85%), but not fast: as a rule, treatment should be performed for 3-5 years. Radical treatment allows a person to either dramatically improve his condition or get rid of allergies altogether,” said Tatyana Litvinova.

According to the doctor, patients should resort specifically to the second method of treatment, especially since in Belarus specific immunotherapy is available in both public and private clinics.

Antihistamines should be used at the first sign of allergy.

Is it more common in children?

A more active manifestation of seasonal allergy in children is a myth, says the specialist. "Pollen allergy is extremely rarely diagnosed in children under three years of age: despite the fact that rare cases have been found in one-year-olds, children from five years and older are more susceptible to it," the allergist explained.

Among adults, shared Litvinova, the peak occurs at a young age – 20-30 years: allergy – this is an excessively violent reaction of the immune system, which for such activity must be strong. Allergies are more rarely manifested at an older age – at 40-50 years of age.

How to prepare for seasonal allergies

Drug prevention, says an allergist, can not be. The only way to prepare for a meeting with allergies is to carry out the mentioned specific immunotherapy. But in advance to remove non-existent symptoms does not make sense: it is recommended to start taking the drugs five to seven days before the beginning of pollination or at the first clinical manifestations.

It is possible to alleviate the state due to hygienic measures, since fine pollen particles are deposited on the skin and hair: you should wash more often, wash your nostrils four times a day with saline, take a shower and wash your hair. For those who are allergic is particularly acute, it is better to be less on the street in dry, hot and windy weather, not to go out of town, less often to open the windows and carry out wet cleaning in the evenings at home.

“In case of pollen allergy, it is recommended that the hypoallergenic diet is adhered to, as the products can strengthen it (talking about combined and cross-food allergies). For example, if tree pollen acts as an allergen, you should exclude apples, pears, nuts and birch sap from the diet. honey is contraindicated and any herb commonly used in everyday life is chamomile, calendula, milk thistle, ”shared Tatyana Litvinova.

In a pinch

According to the allergist, with pollen allergies, acute reactions are not excluded, including asthmatic bronchitis and bronchial asthma.

"Antihistamine (antiallergic) drugs have a rather large divergence from therapeutic to toxic dose, so that in cases where there is no effect from one pill, you can safely drink the second one. You can supplement with enterosorbents (for example, activated charcoal) that will eliminate toxins. Everything else treatment can only be prescribed by a doctor, since the therapy is very different and depends on the severity of the manifestation, "Tatyana Litvinova cautioned.
